Simon Peter was a common and ordinary man touched by Jesus' presence and teaching to bear His saving name in the power of the Holy Spirit. The rock upon which the cross stands represents how Jesus commends Peter for his confession of faith: "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it" (Matthew 16:17-18). The fish (ΙΧΘΥΣ - ichthys) upon the cross represents the call Jesus extends upon Peter that we are privileged to carry. "Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men" (Matthew 4:19).
